Remember Jack Thompson? He is still at war with GTA and now calls it "fascism"
For anyone who missed it: Jack Thompson was the Florida lawyer who went on TV in the early 2000s calling GTA a "murder simulator". Lawsuits against Rockstar, letters to politicians, the Hot Coffee mess with San Andreas… He was disbarred in 2008, and the BBC even made a film about his feud with Sam Houser, The Gamechangers, with Bill Paxton playing him.
PC Gamer reached out to him now, with GTA VI a month away and half of Florida all in on the game: the Heat playing as Vice City, Miami Beach voting for tie-ins… They expected someone calmer twenty years on. Nope (the piece is here):
- He calls Florida institutions promoting GTA VI an "unholy corporatist alliance" and says "government promotion of commercial interests is fascism."
- When told the sheriff's office isn't worried, he accuses the writer of drinking the "fascist Kool-Aid" and compares him to Goebbels.
What gets me is how much has changed. The game ships with an ESRB M and a PEGI 18 and hardly anyone bats an eye. The generation that grew up on San Andreas are now the parents, the cops and the politicians.
Anyone remember when GTA made the news for this kind of thing? Do you think GTA VI will cause a real scandal, or is that era over?
