GTA VI makes The Game Awards 2026 by a single day: the cutoff is November 20
The Game Awards rules set the cutoff at Friday, November 20, 9 p.m. PT. GTA VI launches on the 19th, so it can compete for Game of the Year. Whether the jury gets to play it is another matter.

For months there was a question over whether GTA VI would make it in time for The Game Awards 2026. With launch on November 19 and the show in early December, it was a fair doubt. It is settled now: it is in, by one day.
The official rules say a game has to be on sale no later than Friday, November 20, 2026, at 9 p.m. Pacific. GTA VI launches on Thursday the 19th, so it qualifies with a day to spare. For the fan-voted Players' Voice category the window is even wider: November 30.
There is no carve-out for Rockstar. The rules have no submission form or fee: every game that meets the date is automatically eligible.
Eligible is not the same as favorite
The hard part comes next. Nominations are picked by a jury of more than a hundred outlets worldwide. Each outlet votes as a block, listing its top five per category, and the five games that appear on the most ballots become the nominees. Winners are decided 90% by the jury and 10% by the public vote, which closes on Wednesday, December 9. The show is at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on December 10.
The problem is the calendar. If the jury votes on nominations in mid-November, many writers will not have finished the game, or even started it. And it is hard to hand the top prize to something you have not been able to play through.
The rules allow for exactly this: studios can send advance copies to jury outlets so they can meet the deadlines. That is where Thursday's story comes in. According to Insider Gaming, GTA VI reviews will go live before launch, and NateTheHate says copies will reach the press before the end of October. If so, the jury would have about three weeks with the game before voting. Rockstar has not confirmed it.
GTA's unfinished business
There is some history here. GTA V took Game of the Year at the 2013 Spike VGX, the show that came before today's Game Awards. Since the event took that name in 2014, no mainline GTA has won the prize. Red Dead Redemption 2 arrived in 2018 and picked up several awards, but Game of the Year went to God of War.
GTA VI already knows the stage: it has won Most Anticipated Game at the last two shows. This year, for the first time, it can compete for more than that.
We will update this story when the nominations are announced.
