GTA VI debuts a protagonist duo: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Rockstar has confirmed who they are, that you can switch between them, and what they share, plus six named supporting characters. About the plot, almost nothing. Here's what's confirmed, with the gaps left as gaps.

Jason and Lucia, the protagonist duo

Jason Duval is a former Army soldier who worked for drug runners in the Leonida Keys. Lucia Caminos is the series' first non-optional female protagonist and was held at Leonida Penitentiary. The story kicks off with a failed heist that forces the two to protect each other. The Bonnie-and-Clyde comparison you read everywhere is the press's shorthand, not a Rockstar description — though the setup does invite it.

How the playable duo works

Rockstar has confirmed you can switch between Jason and Lucia, even mid-mission, and that money, hideouts and wanted level are shared. That last part has consequences: whatever one of them does with the police, the other inherits. What isn't confirmed is whether switching is free at any moment outside missions, or whether each has their own skills the way GTA V's three did.

Lucia: why she's a first for the series

She's the first non-optional female protagonist in a numbered GTA, and the qualifier matters. GTA III, IV and V each put you behind a single male lead. GTA 1 and GTA 2 let you pick a character from a roster that included women, and in GTA Online you build your own. So the new part isn't a playable woman: it's that here she isn't an option you can skip.

The supporting cast, one by one

Rockstar has revealed six profiles around the couple. Close to Jason sit Cal Hampton, a paranoid friend, and Brian Heder, drug runner and his landlord. On the organised-crime side, Raul Bautista, an experienced bank robber, and Boobie Ike, a criminal entrepreneur with businesses in Vice City. From the music scene, Dre'Quan Priest, co-owner of the Only Raw Records label, and the duo Real Dimez, made up of Bae-Luxe and Roxy. Each profile, in Rockstar's own words, is below.

What Rockstar hasn't said about the cast

It has named no antagonist. It hasn't confirmed whether a third character is playable. It has announced no cameos from GTA V or from 2002's Vice City. It hasn't published a voice cast: names circulate, but none of them come from a Rockstar statement, so we don't print them. And it hasn't explained how the supporting cast know each other. When it does, the source will be the Newswire.

Where each of them sits in Leonida

The cast spreads across the state. Jason's past is in the Leonida Keys, the archipelago to the south. Boobie Ike's businesses and Dre'Quan Priest's label place a good chunk of the cast in Vice City itself. That's a reading of the profiles, not a confirmation of which region any mission plays in — Rockstar hasn't detailed that.
