Status: Report. These are Sensor Tower estimates, not official sales. Take-Two hasn't released any pre-order figures.

GTA VI has reportedly passed 6 million pre-orders. That's Sensor Tower's estimate in its sales tracker, updated today, October 13: 6.08 million units and $594 million in revenue, five weeks before launch.

What happened

The tracker only covers the PlayStation and Xbox digital stores, net of returns. Here's the split:

  • PlayStation: 4.51 million units and $441 million.
  • Xbox: 1.57 million units and $153 million.
  • Total: 6.08 million units and $594 million.

PlayStation accounts for 74% of pre-orders, down from 77% over the summer (our story).

How it has grown

Pre-orders opened on June 25. Sensor Tower had 4.08 million by July 20 (Sensor Tower) and 4.38 million by mid-August (our report). The big jump came with An Extended Look: on August 27, daily pre-orders were more than five times the previous day's, and the total rose to about 4.86 million (TechPowerUp). It has added over a million since.

One caveat: Sensor Tower changed its model on October 5 to better reflect the split by country, and says that nudged units, revenue and the console mix. Comparing 6.08 million with the summer numbers isn't quite like for like.

What is confirmed

Only what Take-Two has said, and it hasn't given numbers. In August it called pre-orders "exceptional" and Strauss Zelnick described the level as "unprecedented". He also said they skew toward the pricier edition, and Sensor Tower estimated at the time that 89% were for the $100 Ultimate Edition (GamesIndustry.biz).

What we can't say yet

  • That it's exactly 6 million. It's a model, with a margin of error.
  • How many pre-orders there are in total. The tracker doesn't count retail codes or other sales channels.
  • That GTA VI has already beaten GTA V. By Sensor Tower's own figures, GTA V had 7 million pre-orders in 2013. At the current pace GTA VI could pass that before the 19th, but that's our projection.

Why it matters

For comparison, Sensor Tower cites 8 million for Cyberpunk 2077 and 6.5 million for Modern Warfare 3. With five weeks to go and the final marketing push still ahead, GTA VI is already in that league. The next date to watch is November 9, when Take-Two reports its last earnings before launch (our story). It might share an official number there, or stick to adjectives again.
