Status: Debunked. Sony hasn't announced a GTA VI PS5. It revealed a Japan-only black PS5 that happens to share the game's launch date.

Posts on Instagram and TikTok claim "Sony just revealed a new PlayStation for the release of GTA 6". That's not quite it. PlayStation announced a Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition that will be sold only in Japan and launches on November 19, the same day as the game.

What Sony announced

According to the official PlayStation Japan blog, published October 13:

  • PS5 Digital Edition Midnight Black (Japan only), model CFI-2200B02S: ¥55,000 including tax, about $350.
  • Midnight Black disc drive, sold separately: ¥11,980.
  • Both launch Thursday, November 19. Pre-orders open October 20 at Japanese retailers.
  • Includes a DualSense controller, 825GB of storage and Astro's Playroom preinstalled.
  • It only works with the system set to Japanese and a Japan-region PlayStation account.

So what does it have to do with GTA VI?

Only the date. In the post, Sony lists Grand Theft Auto VI first among the games launching that same November 19, but the console has no GTA design, no game and no code. Outlets like VGC and Dexerto frame it the same way: a black PS5 for Japan, unrelated to GTA beyond its launch day.

Is it coming to the West?

Sony hasn't said. For now it's Japan-exclusive and won't work with accounts from other regions, which has frustrated plenty of players, as PlayStation LifeStyle reports. If you want a black PS5 outside Japan, the official option is still the Midnight Black console covers.

What is official for GTA VI on PlayStation

  • The only official GTA VI hardware is the two limited-edition DualSense controllers.
  • There's no official PS5 bundle with GTA VI. The "bundles" that showed up at European retailers in September were distributor listings not confirmed by Sony or Rockstar.
  • If you're in Japan, mind the physical box: the game code expires.

Would you get the black one if it launched here? Let's talk in the forum.
