GTA VI's PS5 code-in-box expires in Japan

Rockstar says the code included with Japan's boxed PS5 release of GTA VI must be redeemed within 170 days. Here is who it affects and what does not expire.

What Rockstar has confirmed

The official Grand Theft Auto VI support page includes a specific condition for one Japanese release: the PS5 code-in-box edition has a limited redemption window. The code is issued on launch day, November 19, 2026, and expires 170 days later because of regional regulations.

That puts the deadline on May 8, 2027. The condition applies to a code that has not yet been redeemed; it is not a countdown attached to every copy of GTA VI.

Confirmed: Rockstar's limit applies to the download code inside the Japanese PS5 box. It does not mean the entire game expires 170 days after release.

Who is affected

The restriction has a narrow scope:

  • It applies to the Japanese PS5 code-in-box version.
  • The code must be redeemed within 170 days of its issue date.
  • Using the official launch date as the starting point, the deadline is May 8, 2027.
  • Rockstar attributes the limit to regional regulations.

VGC, which links directly to Rockstar's support page, reports that Xbox download codes are not subject to the same condition because they do not use the same regional lock. IGN also reports that the issue only arises if the buyer leaves the Japanese PS5 code unredeemed throughout that period.

What does not expire

The notice does not say that an already-downloaded copy will stop working after 170 days. The published limitation concerns the code before redemption. Once the code has been successfully attached to a PlayStation account, the available information does not establish an equivalent expiry date for the downloaded game.

This is also not a new release date or a global change to every GTA VI edition. Rockstar continues to list the game for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026.

Preloading is also dated

The same support documentation cited by VGC lists November 12, 2026 as the start of digital preloading, one week before launch. That allows buyers to prepare the installation early, but it does not establish an exact unlock time for every region or storefront.

What buyers should check

Anyone purchasing this release in Japan should confirm that the box is the PS5 version, check the account region, and redeem the code before May 8, 2027. Keeping the receipt and reviewing the retailer's conditions is especially important when buying the product several months after launch.

Buyers outside Japan should not treat the notice as a worldwide expiration policy. The confirmed scope is the Japanese PS5 release distributed through a code in a box.
