GTA VI: release time in your country and how to preload

GTA VI launches on November 19, 2026, but not at the same moment everywhere. On PS5 it unlocks at midnight in each country, according to its PlayStation Store listing: New Zealand first and, nineteen hours later, Mexico. Preload opens at local midnight on November 12, and the box holds a code instead of a disc. Here are the times for the US, the UK, Spain and Latin America, how to preload step by step, and what Rockstar still hasn't said.

What time GTA VI releases: local midnight, country by country

Rockstar hasn't published a release time on its site or on the Newswire, but the game's PlayStation Store listing does show one, and today it's the most concrete official source there is. What it says: on PS5 there's no single worldwide moment, but a midnight on November 19 for each country. It starts in New Zealand at 11:00 UTC on November 18 and ends in Mexico and Central America at 06:00 UTC on the 19th: a nineteen-hour rollout. On Xbox the store confirms November 19 but shows no time, and Rockstar hasn't confirmed it: local midnight there too is likely, not a fact. The times in this guide are the ones each country's listing showed on October 21, 2026, and Sony can change them up to the last day.

Confirmed

PS5 unlock times for the US, UK, Spain and Latin America

The times as each country's PlayStation Store gives them, with the UTC equivalent. United States: 12:00 a.m. Eastern on November 19 (05:00 UTC), which is 9:00 p.m. Pacific on the 18th, because the store sets one time for the whole country. United Kingdom: 12:00 a.m. on the 19th (00:00 UTC); it's the only one we couldn't open ourselves, and we take it from GTA BOOM's reading of the UK store, a specialist outlet. Spain: 12:00 a.m. on the 19th on the mainland (23:00 UTC on the 18th); in the Canary Islands, 11:00 p.m. on the 18th. Mexico: 12:00 a.m. on the 19th, central time (06:00 UTC); for the same reason it's 1:00 a.m. in Cancún and 10:00 p.m. on the 18th in Tijuana. Argentina and Chile: 12:00 a.m. on the 19th (03:00 UTC). Colombia and Peru: 12:00 a.m. on the 19th (05:00 UTC). And New Zealand, the first: 12:00 a.m. on the 19th in Auckland, which is 11:00 UTC on the 18th, 6:00 a.m. Eastern and 3:00 a.m. Pacific on the 18th.

The New Zealand trick: what it is and why it fails on PS5

Because New Zealand is the first country to reach midnight, every big launch revives the same trick: set the console to New Zealand and play nineteen hours before Mexico, or eighteen before the US East Coast. On PS5 it doesn't work that way. The time that counts is your PSN account's store, not the console's clock, so changing the clock or time zone moves nothing; and PlayStation Support is clear that an account's region can't be changed. You'd need a New Zealand account and to buy the game again in that store. Xbox is a different and murkier story: with other games, the press has reported that switching the console's region brought forward the unlock of a digital purchase. For GTA VI, Rockstar hasn't confirmed it, the Xbox Store publishes no time and nobody has shown it works. If you try it, know that changing region also changes the store you see and can affect payments and subscriptions. There is no official early access of any kind.

Confirmed

The preload: a week ahead, at local midnight

Rockstar has confirmed on its support page that preload starts at local midnight on November 12, 2026, a week before launch, for anyone who pre-ordered the digital version on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. The PlayStation Store listings advertise a 7-Day Pre-load on both editions, Standard and Ultimate. Preloading means downloading the game early, not playing it: the files sit installed and locked until your country's time on the 19th. Which midnight counts, the store region's or the console's, Rockstar hasn't specified. And while big launches usually get an update on day one, none has been announced for GTA VI.

How to preload GTA VI on PS5, step by step

With the digital pre-order in place, the PS5 downloads it by itself if two settings are on: automatic downloads (Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates) and staying connected to the internet in rest mode (Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode). If you'd rather do it by hand from the 12th, open the Game Library, go to Your Collection, pick Grand Theft Auto VI and press Download. Check your free space first: the console won't start a download that doesn't fit. With the physical edition, redeem the code in the box first (how is below) and from then on the preload is identical.

How to preload GTA VI on Xbox Series X|S, step by step

On Xbox, a digital pre-order installs by itself if the console sleeps instead of shutting down and automatic updates are on: Settings > General > Power options, and Settings > System > Updates > Keep my games & apps up to date. By hand, from the 12th: My games & apps > See all > Full library, find Grand Theft Auto VI among your owned games and press Install; or open its Microsoft Store page and install from there. The Xbox Store listing sells it as a single game for Series X and Series S. If you own two consoles, preload on the one you'll play on: that's the one that needs the files on the 19th.

How big GTA VI is: there's no official figure

Neither Rockstar nor the stores have published the size: the PlayStation Store and Xbox Store listings we checked on October 21 don't show it, and neither does Rockstar's support page. What's going around is press estimates, not data: several specialist outlets put it between 150 and 200 GB, and at least one has called a specific figure “confirmed” with no store or Rockstar backing it. The real size usually appears on the store listing once the download opens. Meanwhile, the useful part is what doesn't depend on that number: if you clear 200 GB before November 12, any of the serious estimates fits. On an Xbox Series S, the console with the least storage, that's more than half of the usable space.

Confirmed

The physical edition: a code in the box, no disc

Rockstar put it in writing on its store and support pages: the GTA VI box has no disc, only a download code, and it goes on sale on November 12 so buyers can preload too. The code can be redeemed as soon as you have it. On PS5: PlayStation Store, the three-dot menu at the top right and Redeem Code, or on the PlayStation Store website with your account. On Xbox: Microsoft Store, the Redeem option, or redeem.microsoft.com. One difference that matters if you buy the box abroad: according to Rockstar, PlayStation codes are region-restricted and must match your account's country, and Xbox codes aren't. And with no disc, the download is mandatory for store buyers too.

Frequently asked questions

  • What time does GTA VI release in the US?

At 12:00 a.m. Eastern on Thursday, November 19, 2026, according to the US PlayStation Store listing, which sets 05:00 UTC. The store uses one time for the whole country, so on the West Coast that's 9:00 p.m. Pacific on Wednesday the 18th. That's the PS5 schedule: for Xbox the store shows no time and Rockstar hasn't confirmed it.

  • What time does GTA VI release in the UK and Europe?

On PS5, at local midnight on November 19: 12:00 a.m. in the UK (00:00 UTC, per GTA BOOM's reading of the UK store) and 12:00 a.m. in Spain (23:00 UTC on the 18th, per the Spanish PlayStation Store). Press readings of other European stores put them at the same local midnight. Mexico is the last country on the list: when it unlocks there, New Zealand has been playing for nineteen hours.

  • Can you play early by setting your console to New Zealand?

On PS5, no: your PSN account's region decides, and it can't be changed; the console clock doesn't. On Xbox the trick has worked with other games according to the press, but nobody has tested it with GTA VI and Rockstar doesn't provide for it. There's no official early access.

  • Does preloading let you play before November 19?

No. From local midnight on November 12 the files download, but the game stays locked until your country's release time. It's there so you don't depend on your connection on the 19th itself.

  • How do you redeem the code in the GTA VI box?

On PS5, from the PlayStation Store (three-dot menu, Redeem Code) or on its website with your account; on Xbox, from the Microsoft Store (Redeem) or at redeem.microsoft.com. It can be redeemed as soon as you have it. Watch out with PlayStation boxes bought in another country: according to Rockstar, the code must match your account's region.

  • Can you preload GTA VI with the physical edition?

Yes. The box is a download code, on sale from November 12 according to Rockstar, and once redeemed the game preloads just like a digital pre-order. What there isn't is a disc to put in the console.
