GTA VI's first TV ad debuts during the NBA and cuts the shower scenes

NBC Sports aired a TV cut of the launch trailer on October 20: two shower shots gone, a few shots running longer and no Xbox logo.

Status: Confirmed. The ad aired and several viewers recorded it. The idea that the Xbox logo is missing because of the PlayStation deal is a fan guess: Rockstar hasn't explained the changes.

GTA VI is on TV now. On October 20, NBA opening night, NBC Sports aired the game's first TV ad during Knicks vs. 76ers, and people also spotted it during Pistons vs. Celtics and Thunder vs. Spurs (Kotaku). It's the October 15 launch trailer, with a few cuts.

What's different from the trailer

  • The shower. Of the three shots of Jason and Lucia in the shower, only the first survives. The other two are gone, and a few other shots run slightly longer to fill the gap.
  • A few extra frames. The plane shot and one Jason and Lucia shot are longer. Kotaku points to two moments: right after Jason playfully punches Lucia's arm, and when she jumps from the truck onto the landing gear. Nothing new is shown.
  • No Xbox. Only the PlayStation logo remains at the end. GTA 6 Countdown puts it down to the marketing deal with Sony, but nobody has confirmed that. The game still launches November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Why it matters

With less than a month to go, Rockstar is buying broadcast TV time, and it picked the NBA to start, the same league where the Heat will play as Vice City the night before launch (our story). Kotaku expects the ad to air again at that game. Why the violence clears broadcast standards and the shower doesn't is another conversation.
