GTA VI story mode has no microtransactions and used no generative AI, Rockstar says
Rockstar North co-head Rob Nelson says the campaign has no monetisation and GTA VI used no generative AI. The answer does not cover the future GTA Online.

Rockstar Games has clarified two important questions about Grand Theft Auto VI: its story mode will not include microtransactions, and the studio did not use generative artificial intelligence to create the game.
The information comes from Kinda Funny Games' visit to Rockstar North's Edinburgh offices. According to its account of the conversation with Rob Nelson, the studio's co-head, GTA VI has no “monetisations” within the single-player experience. When asked directly whether generative AI had been used, Nelson replied: “No.”
What Rockstar confirmed
The conversation establishes two separate points:
- GTA VI's story mode will not sell real-money purchases. The campaign will not offer currency, items or advantages through microtransactions.
- Rockstar did not use generative AI to develop the game. The answer concerns the use of that technology in GTA VI's creation.
Push Square, which embedded Kinda Funny's original video, quotes the phrase “no monetisations” when describing the campaign. GameSpot subsequently reported the same information.
This does not mean GTA VI contains no artificial intelligence in the traditional sense. Games use programmed systems to control pedestrians, traffic, enemies and other behaviour. Nelson's answer addresses generative AI, not those conventional routines.
The monetisation answer is limited to story mode
Scope matters. Kinda Funny also asked about the next stage of GTA Online, but Rockstar did not provide details.
The statement about microtransactions therefore cannot be extended to a future online component. The current GTA Online sells virtual currency, but Rockstar has not explained how GTA VI's associated multiplayer experience will work, when it will arrive or which business model it will use.
The verifiable conclusion is narrower: the campaign launching on November 19, 2026 will not contain microtransactions. Claims about GTA Online remain pending.
Why the generative-AI answer matters
The use of generative AI in games has become a labour and creative issue. Nelson's response attributes GTA VI's content to Rockstar's teams and established production tools, without generative models producing dialogue, images or game assets.
The answer does not document every internal tool used by the studio or establish a policy for every future Take-Two title. It applies specifically to GTA VI and the question asked during the preview.
What Rockstar still has not detailed
Several questions remain open despite these confirmations:
- how the future online experience will work;
- whether it will launch with the campaign or later;
- whether that mode will sell virtual currency or other purchases;
- what post-launch content GTA VI will receive;
- how commercial editions and bonuses differ from purchases made inside the game.
Pre-order editions or bonuses sold before launch are not themselves “microtransactions” within the campaign and should be evaluated separately.
GTA VI launches on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. See our An Extended Look recap and what Rockstar has confirmed about multiplayer for the remaining limits.
