IGN has published the full interview its writer Rachel Weber did with Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, back in July. Nelson was playing while they talked: it's the 30-minute demo IGN saw in Edinburgh and wrote up in late August, when the Netflix video came out. We already had the headlines (the wanted system, stealing cars with the phone scanner, the romance being optional). The full transcript adds a lot of detail that hadn't come out.

What happened

Weber says IGN only ran the highlights in August and the full conversation had been sitting on her laptop since. The demo wasn't scripted and things sometimes went sideways, and you can tell: Nelson narrates what's happening, improvises, and is even caught off guard by a Jason line he'd never heard.

What's confirmed

All of this comes from Nelson with the controller in his hands:

  • Safehouses are closer to RDR2's camps than to any previous GTA safehouse: more interactive, more like a home. The one in the demo isn't theirs, they're staying in someone else's place. There you can only trim or shave your hair; for a new style you go to a salon or barber, and each one has its own signature looks.
  • Focus mode. It works like RDR2's Eagle Eye and helps you find things on the map, cops included.
  • Police heat follows your clothes. The cops know what you're wearing. Glasses, a cap or a new haircut won't do it if you're still in the same clothes; buying and putting on a new outfit clears your heat. Splitting Jason and Lucia up helps too, since the police know they're after a couple.
  • Your personal vehicle is your wardrobe and armory. You can call it any time, it carries outfit changes in the trunk, and every weapon you've bought lives in the back.
  • Lucia's ankle tag is part of the story and of how the two of them get together. Nelson wouldn't say more.
  • On Snapmatic you just lurk. You can't post as Jason or Lucia, because they're a couple on the run.
  • Each has a routine. Switch to Jason and he might be at the safehouse or out somewhere. Spend the day solo and the other texts to say they're heading to bed; replying is enough, but ignoring it can hurt the relationship. They can hold hands with R2, hit the gym together (both work out at once) and get around with Ryde Me, the game's take on Uber, which Nelson calls "a good way to do fast travel."
  • Pedestrians come in far more heights and builds. They used to share animation sets, which made that impossible; now the game retargets animations on the fly.
  • Streets are narrower and closer to real scale, which with the traffic makes driving a bit more demanding.

On the relationship, Nelson repeats that it's optional and carries no gameplay advantage, but he adds something new: whether you nurture it "will definitely have a bearing" on how their story plays out. He compares it with RDR2, where Arthur's ending shifted with honor. He also says GTA VI won't lean much on changing towns through your choices, like RDR2's lumber yard.

What we can't say yet

The demo is from July and the game has kept changing since. Nelson doesn't say what happens if the relationship falls apart, only that the story keeps them working together for most of it. He also doesn't explain how the ankle tag limits what Lucia can do early on.

Why it matters

This is the closest we'll get to an uncut play session before November 19. August's headlines were about systems; the transcript shows how they fit into an ordinary afternoon: a robbery that goes wrong, a change of clothes in a corner shop while a patrol car rolls past, a stolen car you have to keep moving because it has a tracker. It lines up with what we already covered on money, robberies and fences.
