GTA VI makes money matter: robberies, fences and mission choices

IGN details robberies with several exits, safes where speed competes with loot value, specialised fences and points where the campaign requires capital. This does not mean directed missions are gone.

Grand Theft Auto VI wants earning and spending money to matter again. The Rockstar North demonstration documented by IGN shows robberies with multiple routes, loot that can lose value, specialised fences and points where the story requires players to raise capital before it continues.

Some missions also provide more room to work. That does not mean GTA VI has abandoned directed storytelling or removed mission failure states.

Money affects the campaign's pace

IGN says Jason and Lucia will sometimes need to raise a particular amount of money before the main story moves forward. The game then pushes players toward criminal activity in the open world instead of sending them directly from one campaign mission to the next.

The demonstrated options include selling cars, robbing businesses and shops and carrying out bank jobs. Rockstar has not explained how much money each gate requires or how frequently this structure appears.

The idea recalls older entries that required the player to fund an operation, but GTA VI appears to connect it with a world where jobs can emerge through exploration and overheard conversations.

Steal quickly or push for a larger take

The demonstration presents a very GTA choice: speed against greed. Blowing open a safe saves time but can damage the contents. Searching the premises for a combination preserves more loot while giving police longer to arrive.

Some buildings offer rear doors or other escape routes. Police may also wait outside a business instead of entering immediately. Planning the exit matters as much as getting inside.

Jason and Lucia can approach some objectives together or separately. Working as a pair strengthens their relationship, but this remains a single-player campaign. The demonstration does not confirm online co-op.

Stolen goods need the right buyer

Loot does not automatically turn into cash. IGN mentions fences for goods such as jewellery and vehicles, with new contacts discovered through story progress.

A stolen car's condition affects its price. Delivering a damaged vehicle reduces the payment, while expensive models may require entry tools, key cloners or a way to handle GPS trackers. Registering a stolen vehicle as personal property also costs money.

Rockstar wants to avoid the GTA V problem of finishing the story with a fortune and few meaningful uses for it. IGN saw clothing, salons, makeup, accessories, vehicles and garages, while the studio is keeping other purchases secret.

Large and small decisions

IGN describes story decisions with immediate consequences and smaller choices that accumulate. Rockstar wants the open world, Jason and Lucia's relationship and the Criminal Profile to feed into the narrative rather than sit in separate boxes.

The demonstration included:

  • an apartment-block mission with several exits;
  • a sequence where the player chooses between driving and shooting from the vehicle;
  • a police chase with a suggested route but other possible escapes;
  • robberies where method changes time, risk and loot value.

These are concrete examples, not a guarantee of total freedom in every mission. Rockstar still uses directed sequences when the story requires them.

What the imported drafts overstated

We found no sufficient evidence that:

  • money is always divided into bank balance, physical cash and loot bags;
  • dying removes all cash carried by the player;
  • ATMs act as a deposit system;
  • every shop on the map can be robbed;
  • every mission supports stealth, combat and driving approaches;
  • the traditional mission failed message has disappeared;
  • two players can control Jason and Lucia in co-op;
  • businesses or new safehouses can be purchased.

Those claims came from a YouTube video or from expanded interpretations of the preview, not from the IGN demonstration itself.

How much does the campaign really change?

The game remains structured around a story. Rockstar appears to be opening more space between its fixed points through alternate routes, emerging activities, accumulated consequences and choices about how to execute a robbery.

We need to see complete missions before knowing where that flexibility ends. The careful conclusion is: GTA VI expands the options inside certain jobs and connects its open world more closely with the campaign; it has not promised an unscripted story without limits.
