Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos in GTA VI: switching and relationship
Rockstar chose Jason and Lucia over a four-protagonist design. Their romance is optional, but they remain criminal partners and players can switch between them.

Why GTA VI has two protagonists
Grand Theft Auto VI is built around Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, two playable criminals whose relationship can evolve throughout the story. Rockstar considered four protagonists before rejecting that structure to avoid dividing player time and weakening the connection with each character.
Rockstar North co-head Rob Nelson told IGN that the studio asked how it could follow GTA V's three protagonists. The answer was not a fourth character, but a tighter focus on two people who work individually and as a pair.
Lucia Caminos
Lucia is one of the two central characters and the first mandatory female protagonist in a mainline GTA. Rockstar describes her as someone who learned to fight at a young age and eventually landed in Leonida Penitentiary after defending her family.
Her release from prison creates another opportunity. Lucia wants a better life for herself and her mother, but understands that reaching it requires a plan. Her bond with Jason and the decisions made during their criminal activities form part of the narrative core.
Jason Duval
Jason grew up around criminals and served in the army before returning to the Leonida Keys. He later worked for local drug runners, a life that eventually brought him to Lucia.
Rockstar describes him as someone who wants an easy life, although his choices have placed him in an increasingly difficult situation. Jason and Lucia understand that they can depend on each other even when the romantic side of their bond is not fully developed.
Character switching and exploring together
IGN's live gameplay demonstration confirms that players can switch between Jason and Lucia at almost any point, following a structure similar to GTA V. They can also explore Leonida together, commit crimes as a couple or separate for independent activities.
Splitting up has practical consequences. If police are searching for a couple, separating may complicate identification. If one character gets into trouble with an NPC, the other can step in to help.
Rockstar has not explained every restriction that may apply during specific missions. “Almost any point” does not necessarily mean every sequence allows unrestricted switching.
A relationship the player can develop
Spending time together and completing shared activities strengthens Jason and Lucia's bond. Ignoring those options does not end their partnership: Nelson confirmed that they remain partners in crime and continue to protect one another.
Romantic closeness is optional and provides no direct gameplay advantage. The way players nurture the relationship will, however, affect how their story develops.
IGN observed smaller interactions such as texting, holding hands, shopping and opening doors. Those moments combine with larger activities to shape the affinity between the pair.
This is not a relationship simulator where the player can permanently break them up. Jason and Lucia remain connected by the narrative, although their bond may lean more toward romance or a platonic partnership.
Hair, beards and physical changes
IGN's detailed demonstration confirms that safehouses allow players to cut or shave hair and beards. New styles still require salons and barbers located around Leonida, with different options tied to particular shops.
IGN also saw workouts increase muscle and strength, while overeating changes body weight. Food restores health, and these activities can be done alone or as a couple.
This confirms customisation and physical changes, but it does not state how quickly hair or beards grow. It also does not prove that GTA VI copies Red Dead Redemption 2's time-based growth system exactly.
The four-protagonist idea Rockstar rejected
After GTA V, the team discussed whether the sequel should expand its playable cast to four characters. Nelson said the concern was that dividing time among so many leads would prevent players from developing a sufficient connection with each one.
The final decision made the chemistry between Jason and Lucia a priority. Rockstar wanted both characters to work as individuals while also convincing players when they are together.
That design discussion does not prove that two fully developed protagonists were removed or that they may appear as supporting characters. Rockstar has only described an early structural idea considered during development.
What remains unconfirmed
We still do not know:
- how much affinity can change the ending;
- which missions are exclusive to each protagonist;
- which sequences temporarily lock switching;
- whether long sections are played as only one character;
- how many narrative variations the relationship contains.
What is confirmed is that GTA VI uses two switchable protagonists, allows cooperation in the open world and features a relationship that is romantically optional but permanent as a criminal partnership.
