GTA VI activities and minigames

The official video Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look shows seventeen activities with direct participation, a HUD or on-screen controls. The Codex list adds five more seen without a HUD: fishing, backyard wrestling, the cage fight in Trailer 2, watching TV and the pool table in a promotional image. Twenty-two in all. Rockstar has published no list of their names or rules, so this guide separates what the material proves from what merely appears in the background.

The Codex list

26 activities in 5 classes

Each one with its type, the minute where it is seen and its source. Tick them off as you do them and keep count here.

The seventeen activities with playable evidence

Basketball, bench press, airboat, cave diving, jumping in and swimming, jet ski, binoculars, kayak, throwing money at the club, circuit racing, street racing, shooting range, motocross racing, a BASE jump with a parachute, drinking, clubbing and interacting with a dog. In all seventeen you see the player at the controls, a dedicated HUD or an on-screen button prompt, which is why they are here and not among the ones seen without a HUD. Whether these are all the game has is impossible to claim: it is what a twenty-seven minute cut shows, not a catalog.

Sport and gym: basketball and weights

At 17:13 Jason holds the ball in front of a hoop and the HUD reads AIM L2 and SHOOT R2, so it is a controllable interaction. The video does not confirm full matches, teams or statistics. At 17:19 Lucia does a bench press with alternating L2 and R2 prompts, which confirms the exercise as an activity. That training changes her build or her attributes, the way it did in GTA: San Andreas, is OUR EXPECTATION based on series history, not something the video shows. Edge adds that the gym runs on a membership: once they buy it, training together is one of the things that raises Jason and Lucia's relationship.

Water: diving, kayak, jet ski and airboat

Six of the twenty-two happen on water, which fits a state of coast and wetlands. At 17:10 an airboat crosses a swamp with the minimap active. At 17:16 a character with a tank and fins moves through an underwater cave and the HUD keeps a status bar. At 17:23, the jump from a jetty and the swim; at 17:25, a jet ski; at 17:29, one of the protagonists paddles a kayak through the canals. And near the end, at 25:51, Jason, Lucia and Brian fish with rods from a boat, with no HUD in sight. The binoculars at 17:27, with a reticle and a zoom prompt, are more an observation tool than a minigame.

Racing, shooting range and parachuting

These are the ones with a dedicated interface, the clearest sign that rules sit behind them. The circuit race at 17:42 shows lap, position among sixteen entrants and a timer. The motocross race at 18:35 repeats the pattern with twelve and adds rivals on the minimap. The street race at 20:21 runs point to point through the city, with progress as a percentage and position among six. The shooting range at 18:31 counts remaining targets, time and a bonus for an instant knockdown. And at 18:49 Lucia jumps from a high point, free-falls and opens her parachute over Vice City. Edge saw another way into a street race: during a highway getaway in an old station wagon, some young guys in a modded 4x4 with purple underglow pull up alongside and challenge Jason. These are semi-scripted encounters.

At home, clubbing and with a dog

Three small interactions that also come with a button prompt. At 7:14 Jason opens his kitchen fridge and picks a drink from a menu, and with the bottle in hand he can drink it or put it down. At 20:26 Lucia, cocktail in hand beside a nightclub dance floor, can drink or drop the glass. And at 1:58, mid-mission, Jason crouches in front of a dog with four on-screen actions, among them petting, scolding and studying it. The video does not show whether any of them has consequences.

Daily life: bus, train, store and nightclub

Edge's cover story (issue 430, October 29, 2026) adds what the video doesn't show. Rockstar North's Phil Hooker says the bus and train systems work: he rides the bus around Leonida and knows the routes. Aaron Garbut talks about roleplaying a life: buying cigarettes and beer at the store, riding the train all day or going to a nightclub. And in the demo, Jason takes a pack of cigarettes from his inventory and smokes. How you pay for a ticket or what the timetables are, Rockstar hasn't said.

Five more seen without a HUD

Rod fishing from a boat (25:51), wrestling in a homemade ring set up in a backyard (9:25), Lucia's cage fight in front of a crowd in Trailer 2 (1:55), the TV in Jason's apartment playing its own shows (7:26), and pool, from a promotional image LOVE Magazine published with Rockstar material, with Lucia holding a cue by the table. None of them shows a HUD or controls: they confirm these exist in Leonida, not how they play, and every entry in the list says so.

Watching livestreams inside the game

Between 18:24 and 18:28, mid-chase, a vertical broadcast appears with comments, a viewer counter and a VIEW LIVESTREAM prompt. That confirms an interface for opening a stream inside the game world. It does not prove the player can broadcast at will, monetize content or run a full social network: those are readings going around, not something the cut shows.

What appears but is not a confirmed minigame

An electric scooter rides past at 17:07, but a non-playable character is riding it and no controls are visible. At 18:29 several people sunbathe on loungers: that is set dressing, not a protagonist activity. At 19:04 Jason is in front of a television again, during a narrative scene, with no menu and no channel change. Minigolf appears in press round-ups; in our sweep of the footage we found no interface or prompt letting us describe it with the same certainty as basketball or racing. Pool does have an entry, from its promotional image, but no interface in sight either. Animal study shows up with the Study prompt next to a dog, and the animals guide covers it.

The items and clothing menu

At 17:50 a menu appears with WEAPONS and ITEMS tabs, plus glasses, a cap, a hanger and FACE WRAP / MASKS, and later a sequence at a car boot highlights the appearance change again. That confirms an interface for items and wearable clothing. On its own it does not confirm a permanent limit on weapons carried, mandatory storage in the vehicle, or a copy of the Red Dead Redemption 2 inventory.

What it shares with Red Dead Redemption 2 and what it does not

The range of activities, the observation tools and the attention to appearance recall what Rockstar did in Red Dead Redemption 2, and they fit an open world that wants to reward exploring outside missions. But it is a design resemblance, not a fact: the video does not prove GTA VI reuses that game's health cores, honor system, witnesses, hunting or fishing. In this cut fishing shows up with no interface (25:51) and there is no hunting activity.

Frequently asked questions

  • How many minigames does GTA VI have?

Rockstar has published no list. An Extended Look shows seventeen activities with direct participation, a HUD or visible controls, and the Codex list adds five more seen without a HUD: twenty-two. That is what the official material shows, not the game's full catalog.

  • Can you play basketball in GTA VI?

The video confirms it as an interaction: at 17:13 the AIM L2 and SHOOT R2 prompts appear with Jason in front of a hoop. What it does not show is whether full matches, teams or statistics sit behind it.

  • Is there diving in GTA VI?

Yes. At 17:16 a character with a tank and fins moves through an underwater cave, and the HUD keeps a status bar. Rockstar has not explained whether diving is free roam or tied to a specific mission.

  • Does the gym change the character's body?

Not confirmed. The video shows the bench press as an activity with its button prompts, but nothing about muscle, stamina or attributes. What Edge does report is that the gym runs on a membership and that training together raises Jason and Lucia's relationship. That it changes their bodies is an expectation carried over from GTA: San Andreas.

  • Are there buses and trains in GTA VI?

Yes. Rockstar North's Phil Hooker told Edge the bus and train systems work: he rides the bus around Leonida himself and knows the routes. Aaron Garbut added that you can ride the train all day.

  • Are there car and motorbike races?

Both, each with its own HUD. The circuit race shows lap, position among sixteen and a timer; the motocross race shows lap, position among twelve and rivals on the minimap. Whether they can be replayed freely is unknown.

  • Will there be fishing and hunting like in Red Dead Redemption 2?

Fishing does show up: near the end of An Extended Look (25:51), Jason, Lucia and Brian fish with rods from a boat. There is no HUD in the scene, so how it plays is unknown. Nothing supports hunting. The resemblance to Red Dead Redemption 2 is in the range of activities, not in confirmed systems.
