GTA 6's police don't just hunt a dot on the map: they hunt a description. Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, told IGN that officers know what you look like and what you're wearing, and shaking them takes more than running: you change clothes, hairstyle or car, or split Jason and Lucia up. Here's what Rockstar has said about the wanted level, where each fact comes from and what's still unknown.

Where what's known about the police comes from
Rockstar hasn't published an explanation of the wanted system on its site. What's known comes from two places. The first is its official video, Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, from August 27, 2026, which shows chases with the wanted meter on screen. The second is the interviews from the press event at Rockstar North, above all Rob Nelson's demo for IGN, whose quotes GameSpot reported on October 7, and the write-ups from outlets that were there, such as TechSpot. Everything below comes with its source, and what comes from a write-up rather than a quote is labeled as such.
Confirmed
Up to six stars
GTA VI's wanted level goes back to six stars, one more than GTA V, which topped out at five. It shows in the official preview itself: in a chase from An Extended Look the meter reads four stars out of six, as Shacknews and TechSpot described. What Rockstar hasn't detailed is what each level brings. In earlier GTAs the higher stars added helicopters, roadblocks and eventually the military, but that's series history, not an announced rule for GTA VI. It also hasn't said what it takes to reach the sixth.
Confirmed
The police search for a description, not just a spot on the map
The big change is that a crime no longer just paints a target on you. According to TechSpot's write-up of the press event, for the police to respond someone has to witness the crime and report it, or an alarm has to go off, and the officers who show up get a description: your face, your clothes and your vehicle. On screen, icons under the stars show which of those three they know, and hollow stars mean they're searching without your description. Nelson summed it up in his demo for IGN, in quotes GameSpot reported: there's a heat system, and the police know what you look like and what you're wearing.
Confirmed
How to lose the cops: clothes, hair and masks
If they're hunting your look, the point is to stop looking like you. Rob Nelson told IGN that putting on glasses and a cap isn't enough, because they still know what you're wearing: you need a full change, at a clothing store or from the outfits kept in the trunk of your personal vehicle, which you can call to you. TechSpot adds two details from the event: a haircut clears your face from the description, and wearing a mask during a job and taking it off afterward can keep the police from ever learning your face, even with cameras around. How long each description lasts and whether it fades on its own, Rockstar hasn't specified.
Confirmed
Switching cars and splitting up
Your vehicle counts as much as your clothes. According to TechSpot's write-up, swapping a recognized car for another one lowers police attention, and GameSpot notes that officers quickly pick up what you're driving and where you were last seen. The other way out is new to GTA VI: if Jason and Lucia are together, they can split up, one of the options Nelson listed. And the classic still works: get out of the area the police are responding to before they arrive and you're clear. Keep in mind the two share a wanted level, as Rockstar confirmed: whatever one of them stirs up, the other inherits.
Confirmed
Run without escalating: what Rockstar wants you to do
Nelson also explained the intent. As he told IGN, the story is about a couple on the run, and the game is built around hit-and-run play: you commit the crime, leave before the cops arrive and, if you don't start shooting or escalating, you're generally fine. You can escalate, and fast, if that's what you want. Rockstar has said you can still cause the usual chaos, but with more consequences, because it doesn't want you to feel all-powerful the way GTA V often did. And nobody has to die for you to be wanted: a stolen car or a beaten-up pedestrian is enough to raise the level.
What's still unknown about the police
What decides each chase is still missing: which units each level sends, how long it takes the police to lose your description, whether there are bribes or fines, what getting out of the hospital or jail costs and how cameras count outside of a job. Rockstar hasn't detailed it, and guides that state it as fact are making it up. One piece of series history to keep in mind: in GTA V, losing the cops meant getting out of the officers' line of sight, and hiding worked better than running. Whether GTA VI works similarly is an expectation, not something confirmed.
Frequently asked questions
How many wanted stars does GTA 6 have?
Six, one more than GTA V. The meter in the official preview, An Extended Look, has six stars, as Shacknews and TechSpot described. What each level brings, Rockstar hasn't detailed.
How do you lose your wanted level in GTA 6?
Rob Nelson told IGN the options: leave the area before the police arrive, change your clothes or hairstyle, switch cars, or split Jason and Lucia up if they're together.
Does changing clothes help you lose the police?
Yes, but it has to be a full outfit: glasses and a cap aren't enough. You go to a clothing store or use the outfits in your personal vehicle's trunk, per Nelson's demo for IGN.
What do hollow stars mean in GTA 6?
That the police are looking for you but don't have your description, according to the press event write-ups. Rockstar hasn't explained it on its site.
Do the police in GTA 6 recognize your car?
Yes. The vehicle is part of the description, and swapping a recognized car for another lowers attention, according to TechSpot's write-up of the press event.
