From its very first trailer, it was clear that Grand Theft Auto VI would move away from the frenetic, satirical tone of GTA V to embrace a narrative maturity much closer to what we saw in Red Dead Redemption 2. Now, just a few months before its official release, Rockstar Games has confirmed what many had suspected.

The Direct Influence of RDR2

In a recent interview with the French publication TroisCouleurs, Rob Nelson, co-director at Rockstar North, spoke about the impact RDR2 had on the development of this new installment.

“We wanted to build on the depth and the meaningful way of interacting with the world that we’d managed to add in RDR 2, but also that emotional connection that people ended up having with Arthur (...) We asked ourselves if there was a way for Grand Theft Auto to have something like that and how to achieve it,” Nelson explained.

How will this connection be achieved?

To bring this emotional weight to the GTA universe, the developers have implemented several key new features:

  • An honor system: Similar to that of the Wild West, it will judge our actions.
  • Decisions with consequences: Our choices will have a real impact on the story and the characters’ development.
  • A dynamic relationship: The bond between Jason and Lucía will evolve based directly on how we play.

The Importance of Everyday Life

Rockstar knows that empathy doesn’t come solely from shootouts. The key to humanizing the characters lies in the quiet, “irrelevant” moments—like hanging out and relaxing in their apartment. Learning about their daily lives outside the criminal world will make the moments of tension hit much harder.

Rob Nelson gave a very clear example of how this empathy will affect gameplay:

“When you suddenly see Lucía being thrown down the stairs, your character switches to Jason and you can’t hear her… it creates a real sense of concern.”

A Huge Challenge

Matching the narrative mastery of Red Dead Redemption 2 won’t be an easy task. However, this isn’t the first time the GTA series has explored its more serious side; GTA IV, with the tragic story of Niko Bellic, already proved that the franchise can successfully tackle more raw and emotional themes. With GTA 6, however, the ambition and dramatic scale promise to take this formula to a whole new level.
