GTA VI has more than 600,000 animations and a team for its NPCs
Aaron Garbut says GTA VI contains more than 600,000 animations, compared with about 55,000 in GTA V. Rockstar also created a team dedicated to its NPCs.

GTA VI has more than 600,000 animations. Aaron Garbut, co-head of Rockstar North, gave that figure in an interview with The New York Times and said the studio built a team dedicated to creating and directing its non-player characters. PC Gamer and TechRadar covered the remarks and agree on the main figures.
The number needs some context
Garbut compared the total with Rockstar's previous games. GTA VI has more than 600,000 animations, Red Dead Redemption 2 had about 300,000 and GTA V had about 55,000. That puts the new game at more than ten times GTA V's figure and roughly twice Red Dead Redemption 2's.
These are production numbers shared by Rockstar, not an independently audited technical count. They also do not mean GTA VI has 600,000 pedestrians or that every NPC owns a completely unique set of movements. An animation can belong to a character, interaction, object, scene or behavioural variation.
A team built around individual NPCs
Garbut said Rockstar set up a Los Angeles team of writers, directors and producers focused on non-player characters. He described the studio's approach as art-directing each individual NPC.
That work reaches into the interiors as well. The team considered who lived in a space, what they drank, what marks they might leave on a table and which photographs would appear on the walls. Some of those pictures could show the people who live there, including details such as tattoos and family members.
It fits the official footage, where crowds have different bodies, clothes, gestures and activities. A packed street or nightclub does not by itself tell us how many NPCs can stay active at once, or whether every area will behave the same way.
The reactions are part of the same work
IGN's playable demonstration showed how those systems meet in the world. When a player taunts someone or displays a weapon, some NPCs back away, others escalate and a fight can draw in more people.
Rockstar North co-head Rob Nelson said earlier GTA games could make the player feel too powerful compared with the surrounding population. GTA VI is aiming for residents who do not all respond in the same way.
The interaction changes when the weapon is holstered too. L2 can be used to talk to or taunt someone instead of aiming immediately. IGN attributes that feature to animators, designers and dialogue writers working together.
What the figure does not prove
The number describes production scale. It does not prove that every NPC is unique, every interior is accessible, the displayed crowd density persists everywhere or all of the animations appear during free roam.
Rockstar confirmed that An Extended Look was captured in-game on PlayStation 5, but it has not published final resolution, frame-rate or graphics-mode specifications. More animations tell us about the work behind the game, not how the console will perform.
GTA VI launches on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The PC version still has no official date.
