Confirmed

Rockstar drops 39 new GTA VI screenshots, and one shows a character who looks just like Kodak Black

We went through all 39 shots in GTA VI's Launch Gallery: a Kodak Black lookalike (unconfirmed), long-haired Jason, a bank robbery and the insides of The Rusty Anchor and Delights.

Status: Confirmed. The screenshots are official: Rockstar published them on its site and announced them on the Newswire. That one character is Kodak Black is not confirmed: it is a resemblance pointed out by press and fans.

Rockstar has opened GTA VI's Launch Gallery with 39 new screenshots, two weeks before the November 19 launch, and announced it on its Newswire. We went through every one, and they are all in our gallery with their own descriptions.

Is it Kodak Black?

The shot everyone is talking about is a VIP booth scene: a man with dreadlocks, face tattoos, a silver grill, a white tee and a big diamond octagonal pendant, surrounded by women, champagne and cash. The resemblance to rapper Kodak Black is striking, and TheGamer already takes it as a given in its headline.

But nobody has confirmed it. Rockstar names no characters in the post or the gallery, and TheGamer quotes neither Rockstar nor the rapper: it goes by the resemblance. The pendant does not settle it either; it reads something like "1800", not his name. We are calling it what it is: a character who looks just like Kodak Black, unconfirmed.

What the screenshots show for the first time

  • A bank robbery: Jason and Lucia, bandanas over their faces, hold up a teller and customers (see shot).
  • Long-haired Jason: he appears that way in two shots, holding bikers at gunpoint and behind a car door with helicopters overhead (one, two). Lucia has a new look too, with a shoulder-length cut (see).
  • The Rusty Anchor inside: a stage with a band, Barracho and Patriot neon, and people dancing.
  • Delights inside: the Port Gellhorn club shows its stage under the "Delights Cabaret" neon.
  • Ricardo Tires: a Vice City gas station with a giant tire on its pole, which we have just added to the Codex.
  • Vice-Dale Police on the water, raiding a canal-side mansion by boat (see).
  • Diving in the Leonida Keys, with a lionfish in the foreground (see).
  • The Grassrivers at night: an airboat in the fog with a red-eyed alligator lurking (see).

Patriot beer, the same brand the Miami campaign sold in real life, shows up twice: at The Rusty Anchor and at a Grassrivers campsite.

The other 27 screenshots

The 12 above tell the most. These are the rest of the Launch Gallery; each one has its own page in our gallery.

What we can't say yet

  • That the man in the booth is Kodak Black, or that he will be on the radio.
  • Whether the long-haired Jason shots come from another point in the story.
  • Whether Delights, The Rusty Anchor or Ricardo Tires can be entered.
  • Are the cars from the Miami convoy the ones on the highway in Vice City at night? You can spot a lime green car and a pink one, like in the convoy, but the models are not distinguishable.

Our read

Certainty: Speculation

Last week we asked whether anything would land on November 5 and bet on radio stations or merch. Wrong format: Rockstar dropped 39 screenshots. What held is the Thursday rhythm, which came through again.

The Kodak question says more about the campaign than about the rapper. Rockstar has not put a name to it, but two weeks out it picked a face everyone recognizes for its gallery. If it is him, he would be the first artist to show up as a character rather than just a radio voice, like Bad Bunny or Trick Daddy and Trina. If it is a lookalike, it is a very GTA joke, from a series that has always spoofed celebrities without naming them.

For players, the useful part is everything else: interiors of places that until now were just a sign, two looks for Jason that hint at time jumps, and more life on Vice City's canals. We would watch two things: whether Kodak Black posts anything, and whether Rockstar credits real people when the credits roll.

Our take: a licensed lookalike is more likely than a big announced cameo.
